Welcome to Elgeyo Marakwet County

The home of champions

WHAT WE ENVISION FOR TOURISM THIS YEAR...

During colonial times, Elgeyo Marakwet was a tribal reserve. It was under British administration, but no white settlement was allowed. In this respect, it was very different to counties to the west, which were largely taken over by large-scale farmers from Europe and South Africa.

The county is relatively small : 125 km in length (N to S) and varying in width (E to W) from 9 km to 50 km. It is narrowest in the central part (near Iten) and widest in the north (where the Cherangany Hills project out to the west).

Despite its small size, it is a county with a lot to offer. Being situated on the western escarpment of the Rift Valley, it encompasses great differences in altitude. This in turn creates a wide range of climatic conditions, vegetation, animal life and agricultural activities.  The lowest point, in the Kerio Valley, is at about 1000m; the top of the Kerio escarpment (near Iten) is 2300m ; the highest peak of the Cherangany Hills is at 3500m.

Visitors will not lack for experiences and activities to enjoy. The region has something for everyone. However, two special features that may be highlighted are:

  1. The wild elephants of Rimoi National Reserve;
  2. The County’s pre-eminence as a high-altitude training ground for athletes, particularly long-distance runners. Iten is a World Athletics Sports Heritage site.

The longest ‘single drop’ waterfall in Kenya (at 186m) is also a feature in the rainy season. It is called Torok.  Unfortunately, Torok Falls is reduced to a trickle in the dry season.
