Welcome to Trans Nzoia County

The bread basket of Kenya

WHAT WE ENVISION FOR TOURISM THIS YEAR...

“Trans Nzoia” means “across the river Nzoia” and indicates that, for most visitors, getting there will involve crossing this large river. The Nzoia is the confluence of a number of smaller rivers that drain down from the Cherangany Hills in the east and Mount Elgon in the west.

The huge mass of Mount Elgon dominates the region; the landscape, it’s communications, the economy and even the socio-political divisions. The fertile volcanic soils around the mountain, irrigated by a myriad of mountain streams, produce the highest yields of maize in Kenya. The era of “white-settler” farming also left a legacy of good farming practice and infrastructure that helps to make the region so agriculturally productive.

Other lingering remnants of the colonial era are a decrepit railway line terminating in Kitale, a museum full of old artefacts and memorabilia and a golf club (with scenic 18-hole course).

The Mount Elgon National Park is notable for its dense pristine forest, elusive animals (such as mountain elephants and Forest hog) and numerous caves.

Above the forests, the unique moorland vegetation creates a unique and fantastic landscape. Climbing the high peaks, Koitobos and Sudek, is a must for serious hikers and mountaineers.

Also worth a visit is the small Saiwa National Park, dedicated t the conservation of the rare Sitatunga antelope.

The entrances to both Elgon and Saiwa Parks are within short driving distances of Kitale.
